The
Decision to Adopt
WebDAV
Beyond
the operational costs of a document management system, the cost
of customization and integration programming is the most substantial
investment for the various departments. Programming also represents a
substantial cost for the subsequent system and platform migrations that
inevitably occur. What would be very attractive would be a standard
document management programming interface, akin to what SQL provides
for databases, which would be vendor, operating system, and platform
independent.
Discussions
of document management on the web eventually turn to
WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) which is the Internet
standard for managing documents. WebDAV has been widely implemented for
Internet collaborative and document sharing applications.
Significantly, WebDAV is well supported by
Microsoft
for both clients (Microsoft Office 2000 and XP, Windows
Explorer, and Internet Explorer) and servers , and thus has gained wide
acceptance―due in no small part to it having been fully embraced by
this major industry player.

to prevent collapse of Doha talks
Efforts
failed again in breaking an impasse at the Doha Round of trade
talks of the World Trade Organization, with Japan left in the dark
during final negotiations at last week's meeting.
Both
are somber facts that require serious consideration.
Ministerial
talks between the Group of Four trade powers--the United
States, European Union, India and Brazil--collapsed Thursday, days
after they convened in Germany with the aim of reaching an agreement in
the Doha Round of talks within this year.
Since
it started at the end of 2001, the Doha Round of talks has
broken down many times and is still struggling to find a way out of the
imbroglio.
If
the G-4 powers had reached a basic agreement during the recent
talks, it could have generated the momentum needed to conclude the Doha
Round
as scheduled.

先週の会合における最終交渉で日本には知らずに伏せられたままで、WTO（世界貿易機関）のドーハラウンドの貿易交渉で行き
詰まりを打開する為の試みは
再び失敗に終わった。
これらの事実は共に本格的な検討が必要な重苦しい事実である。
今年中にドーハラウンド交渉での合意を成立させることを目指して開かれたドイツで会談の後、木曜日に開かれた貿易４大国（米国、EU、インド、ブラジル）
のグループ間での閣僚会談は破綻した。
２００１年の終わりに開始されて以来、ドーハラウンド交渉は何度も決裂してきたが、難局を切り抜けるのにいまだもがき続けている。
４大国グループが最近の議論の中で基本合意に達していれば、ドーハラウンドに結論を出すのに必要な推進力を予定通り生み出したことであっただろう。

CPUが4個入ったクアッドコア
PCの動作は本当に速くなる？
クアッドコアCPUとは、メモリーから命令を読み取り、その流れを制御して順次実行する「コア」と呼ぶ部分を1つのパッケージに4個封入したCPUだ。
PC向けには2006年11月にIntelがはじめて出荷、その後ラインアップを増やしている。AMDも2007年後半に新設計のCPUとして
「Phenom FX」「Phenom
X4」ブランドで市場に出す。Intelは、クアッドコアCPUの値下げを予定している。新製品登場と値下げでクアッドコアCPUがぐっと身近になる。
ところが、クアッドコアCPUは使い方によってはちっとも速さを感じられない。これまでとは速さの「質」が異なるためだ。
CPUに起因するPCの速さには大きく分けて2種類ある。1つは特定の処理におけるレスポンスの速さ。これらはCPUの設計が同じならば動作周波数が影
響 すると思ってよい。1GHzのCPUで１分かかっていた処理が2GHzなら30秒で終わるといったイメージだ。
もう1つは、一定時間当たりにこなせる量。これはコア数の影響が大きい。例えば1分かかる処理が4個ある場合、シングルコアだとすべて処理し終えるのに4
分かかるが、クアッドコアなら1分で済む。シングルコアで4個の処理を同時に
実行しようとすると、現実には各処理を短い時間で強制的に切り替えつつ、少しずつ進めることになる。いわゆる「重い」状態だ。クアッドコアだとこれが軽減
される。遅く
ならない（なりにくい）わけだ。

Does
it really make PC move faster?
Quad-core
CPU is the type of CPU contains four "cores" which reads commands from
memory, controls and executes its flow sequentially. Intel
has released Quad-core CPU designed for PC for the first time in
November, 2006, and then increasing their lineup. AMD is going to come
out with brands, "Phenom FX" and "Phenom X4", as newly-designed CPU in
the latter half of 2007. Intel is planning to lower price of quad-core
CPU. Appearance of new product and price reduction makes quad-core CPU
significantly easier to buy them.
However,
we can not feel the speed from quad-core CPU depends on the way we use.
Because "type" of speed differs until it was now.
There
are two main types of the speed of PC attributes to CPU. One is the
speed of response in the specific processing. You may think it is
influenced by operating frequency if the design of the CPU is the same.
Picture the image of processing which takes only thirty seconds to
finish with 2GHz CPU which used to have taken one minute with 1GHz CPU.
The
other is the quantity of the workload which can be managed per certain
period of time. It is greatly influenced by the number of cores. For
example, if there are four processing which takes one minute each, it
takes only one minute to finish processing with quad-core while it
takes four minutes to finish all the processing with single-core. If it
were to try to execute four processing simultaneously with single-core,
actually, however, maybe it will advance one small step at a time,
switching each processing forcibly in short time. This is so called
"heavy" state. However, this is reduced in case of quad-core. It means
it does not become (is unlikely to) become slow.
